At The Woody House

Devin Nose
Devin was injured at the batting cages yesterday. A ball ricocheted and hit him in the nose. Doc says it’s “displaced”, so after the swelling goes down, we’ll get an x-ray on Friday and know more. He’s taking it like a man.

Ian’s birthday is Friday and he’s thirteen! I will now officially have three “teenagers” in the house for 38 days, until Preston turns twenty. I love my sons!

3:33 AM Awakening & Discerning God’s Voice

God and I have a deal set up. If I awake at 3:33 AM, it’s for a specific purpose, and I should listen to what God is saying.

Think what you may, but this tool helps me discern God’s voice from normal middle-of-the-night awakenings. If it’s not 3:33 AM, I simply go back to sleep.

This morning, I was wide awake at 3:33 AM, and the thought immediately came to my mind, “I should open the windows and let the cool air in.” The house did feel a bit stuffy, so I looked at the thermostat and decided to open the window, allowing the chilly air into the room. I was convinced God WASN’T talking to me though, so laid back down, yet remaining wide awake.

After lying there about 10 minutes, reading emails, I decided to go ahead and get my day started. After taking showering, I walked out of my bedroom and smelled the hideous, alarming odor of natural gas. One of the range burners was on slightly, releasing carbon monoxide into our house.

I turned off the gas, running through the house, opening every window and door, while checking on the family. Fortunately, everyone was okay, and no one had symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

As I left the house, I dropped by my friendly 24-hour Walmart to purchase my first carbon monoxide detector and alarm. It’s something I should have had all along.

So, I guess I did hear from God this morning. And I’m glad I followed the promptings in my heart, regardless of how “unspiritual” they may have seemed.

Lessons learned?
1. Always have a carbon monoxide detector in the house.
2. God is speaking, but far too often, I dismiss His voice as my wandering mind.
3. God loves me and my family. He really does!

My encouragement to you?
Tune in to God’s voice!
I believe God speaks to us in a variety of ways including,
- Through the Bible
- Through total strangers
- Through thoughts, feelings and impressions
- Through preaching
- Through dreams
- Through trusted friends and family members
But if that impression contradicts the Bible, it’s surely not from God. Therefore, we all need to have a good handle on what the Bible says, if we’re really going to be able to discern if and when God is speaking to us.

How?
Primarily, it’s 3-fold:
1. Regularly attend church where all of the Bible is taught.
2. Read the scriptures.
3. Involve yourself in some type of Bible study group.

I really hope you’ll come out and join me for lunch tomorrow (Friday) at CLC’s Marketplace Church. There’s no cost to you! We begin at 12:10 and end promptly at 12:50 PM.

This week, I’m sharing the first message in myTransforming Me series entitled, The Attitude Factor. Our lives are transforming constantly, either for good or for bad. As our lives transform, we impact everyone around us. Intentional life transformation will give us the edge to truly live the full life we desire. I’ll be specifically sharing regarding how I overcame workplace challenges working for a “lunatic boss”.

My guest business leader at Marketplace Church this week is David Clarke, owner of Buon Giorno Coffee. I know you’ll enjoy hearing David’s story.

On Sunday, at 11:00 AM, my message for Sunday Worship is entitled, The Story of the Ages. If you’ve ever desired to get a better grasp on the Bible as a whole and to increase your appetite for the scriptures, don’t miss this Sunday at CLC!
